Lt. Calvin Pierce Autograph Letter Signed Discussing the Union's Loss at Chickasaw Bayou and the Emancipation Proclamation. Eight pages of bifolia, 5" x 8", Young's Point, Louisiana; March 1, 1863. In this letter addressed to his sweetheart, Cordeal, Pierce discusses the role slavery played in the war, the effect the Emancipation Proclamation will have, and his refusal to accept a discharge if it were offered. It reads in part: "... Cordeal, I must confess that I am somewhat surprised at the tone and sentiment expressed in a part of your letter...Whatever I may think in regard to the policy of the administration with reference to the subject of slavery, I believe it to be my duty and the duty of everyone in this great struggle for the preservation of the union, to give in their cordial support, for Gods Sake I say, don't let the country be divided now...Whether President Lincoln's Proclamation will result for the best is a problem to be solved, as yet I see no harm with it certainly does one good thing it lets us know who our enemies are, if we have got to contend about the everlasting n*** Emancipation proclamation, and fight for the union in good earnest..."
