John D. Imboden Autograph Letter Signed with Union Troop Movements in Shenandoah Valley Content. Two pages, 7.75" x 12.25", Shenandoah Mt.; December 18, 1862. Addressed to Col. Henry B. Davidson while Imboden was a colonel with the 1st Virginia Partisan Rangers, later known as the 62nd Virginia Mounted Infantry. In this letter Imboden writes to Davidson to inform him that the Union force has moved out of Petersburg and Moorfield. He also mentions a note he received from Captain Thomas Belt Swann of the Virginia 3rd State Line Cavalry Battalion offering his service. It reads in part: "...A man from Pendleton today reports the Yankees as having left Petersburg & Moorfield & gone back to the R.R. Don‘t know whether it is true. Think it probably is. I sent two Companies to Hardy this morning to break their foraging parties in that County. Capt Thos B. Swann Comdg, 3rd Regt Va State Line (Gen Flag's Army) sent me a note last night that he was in Bath with 500 men & desired to cooperate with me...I wrote to him to hold himself in readiness to join me in the long delayed movement on Beverly as soon as we can...my last information is that the snow drift on that mountain is still impassable to wagons or Artillery for a considerable distance...Do you ever hear from Jenkins? He is not cut off by such mountains...and I have been expecting everyday to hear of his pitching into there..." Signed, "J. D. Imboden Col Comdg." From the Military Archive of CSA General Henry B. Davidson. Condition: Uniform block toning on recto and, presumably from being stored next to other documents. Lightly rubbed and toned from age with some ink blotting, one of which touches the signature. Smoothed mail folds. HID03101062020 © 2020 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
