[Civil War]. Ohio Governor William Dennison, Jr. Document Signed, "W. Dennison." One page (on Executive Department, The State of Ohio stationary), 7.75" x 9.75", Columbus, Ohio; February 1, 1861. The document, addressed to the Governor of Georgia [Joseph E. Brown], acknowledged the receipt of Georgia's ordinance of secession from the United States, which was officially confirmed on January 19, 1861. The document reads: "Sir: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of a certified copy of ‘An Ordinance to dissolve the Union between the State of Georgia, and other States united with her, under a Compact of Government entitled, the United States of America.' Respectfully, etc., W. Dennison" William Dennison Jr. (1815-1882) was first a Whig and later a Republican politician from Ohio. He served as Governor of Ohio (1860-1862) and as U.S. Postmaster General (1864-1865) in the administration of President Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War.
