Karl Hagemeister (1848 - 1933) Germany. Pencil on Paper. Dated 1876. Measure 8"in H x 11"in W and 13"in H x 16"in W wit frame. Known for: Landscape painting of local views, marine and coastal scenes. After years of apprenticeship and traveling through Europe together with artists from the Leibl Circle, Karl Hagemeister returned to his birthplace Werder on the Havel in 1884, where he stayed until the end of his life. Around 1885 he increasingly dealt with impressionistic concepts of perception and representation and "expanded his choice of motifs and his color palette, which became lighter and more delicate" (Hendrikje Warmt). Most of the works created there were created directly in front of nature and were later only refined in nuances in the studio. While Hagemeister largely turned to the pastel technique in the 1890s, he created some of his most impressive oil paintings in the mid-1880s."Observing nature, living in and with it, listening to its most intimate moods, that is the great secret that we all have to learn" (Hagemeister quoted from Frida Elisabeth Ballien, Schülerin, 1928, ibid.) . The written report by Hendrikje Warmt from March 2020, in which the authorship of Karl Hagemeister is confirmed, is available as a copy.
