Schist stoneGandhara , 3rd to 4th centuryDimensions: Height 33 cm by 10 cmWeight: 4090 gramsStanding Bodhisattva on a square base with bare feet. The Gandhara sculpture was heavily influenced by Scynthia, Roman and Parthian art besides Indian influences. The Buddha or Bodhisattvas are often depicted as bejewelled prince with moustache and wavy hair. This example is dressed in heavy cloths draping the body in many waves. The chest is naked and only decorated with beaded necklaces. With his left hand he is holding the robe draped over his shoulder, the other hand is raised, seemingly holding something before or gesturing a mudra. Details are lost. The face is slim with a moustache with a serious expression. A turban-like headdress decorates the head which is backed by a round aureole. Large ear pendants hang down onto the shoulders.
