ROBERTSTON'S ADVERTISING FIGURE:- An Edwardian child's or preserve spoon with an egg-shaped bowl and the Golly*figure terminal, by Levi & Salaman, Birmingham 1909; 5.1" (13 cms) long; 0.85 oz *This famous figure was adopted by Robertson's Preserve Manufacturers Ltd. in 1910 after a trip to the USA to set up a plant in Boston. James Robertson's son bought a Golly doll whilst he was there and for some reason the figure started to appear on their price lists and then became their trade mark. As the date letters on hallmarked silver changed each year on St.Dunstan's day, 19th May, the date letter "K" on this spoon would have been used up until May 1910. The spoon therefore must be one of the earliest examples of the trademark coming into general usage.
