FOLLOWER OF GEORGE ROMNEY (1734-1802) PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMAN, IDENTIFIED AS THOMAS FITZHERBERT (c.1746-1822) Half length, in profile, wearing a red coat and waistcoat, white neckcloth, holding a sealed letter, oil on canvas, mounted oval 74 x 60.5cm. * After an early career as a merchant, Fitzherbert won the corrupt seat of Arundel in 1780. Despite returning unopposed in 1784, he was a squabblesome backbencher and did not seek re-election in 1790.
