A high relief 0.970 silver plaque depicting the Japanese ship, the Kanrin Maru (translates as 'Unyielding'). Additionally, there are two sterling plaques, the top engraved: 'To the Japan Group, Philadelphia.' The lower plaque engraved: 'In Celebration of the American Independence Bicentennial, 1775-1976 from the American Japan Society, Inc., Tokyo'. Complete with the original felt-lined shipping case. Dimensions: plaque- 7 1/4 inches tall X 11 1/2 inches wide; 18.4 cm tall X 29.2 cm wide, frame- 19 1/8 inches tall X 23 1/2 inches wide; 48.6 cm tall X 59.7 cm wide. All measurements are approximate. Condition: No noted damage. Provenance: From a collection in West Virginia. Historical Note: The Kanrin Maru was a steam powered sailing corvette that carried the first official Japanese embassy to the United States, landing in San Francisco in 1860.
