A George II French plate brass shaving jug, probably London circa 1730 Of compressed baluster form upon a moulded shaped foot, the upturned C scroll handle with later rattan covering leading to a hinged lid with scalloped rim surmounted by a knop finial. Later silver electroplated. Height – 19.2 cm / 7.5 inches Weight – 506 grams Two comparable shaving jugs with identical handles are in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (2017.297) and the Science Museum Group collection (A634751). A shaving jug with a French coat of arms of comparable form was sold Christie’s London, 16 July 2010, lot 24 (£1,500 incl. premium) There is some discussion whether these shaving jugs are French made or from the London ‘French Plate’ trade for wares of silvered brass.
