笔筒黄花梨木为材，整木掏制而成，只有底心为另件。木质紧实，发色红润，包浆古雅。笔筒呈圆筒形，口底尺寸相同，平沿无唇，筒壁厚实，黄花梨木以木色和花纹取胜。因此件笔筒尺寸很大，所以能更好地表现木质与木色，黄花梨木纹中所谓的“鬼脸”纹也在筒部分清晰可见。筒壁一侧阴刻白菜图样，寓意“百财”，甚是吉祥。雕者所施手法写实入微，白菜肥硕鲜嫩，叶片筋脉宛然，栩栩如生，层次井然有序。另一侧满刻诗文，用刀老辣自如。
