Full title: Three bamboo 'Japonism' chairs and a bench, probably Daï Nippon, Paris, late 19th C. Description: Dim.: 93 x 44 x 39 cm (the chairs) Dim.: 123 x 102 x 53 cm (the bench) Daï Nippon was a furniture manufacture settled in the heart of Paris, 3-5 Boulevard des Capucines, in 1889. Inspired by Chinese and Japanese arts, it was using materials imported from Asia like Tonkin mother-of-pearl or Chinese lacquer in their made-in-France furniture. The company was specialized in artifacts and furniture meeting the demand for “Japonism” items so popular at the time. The Daï-Nippon company was also selling furniture adapted to European taste they imported from Asia through their many purchasing agents in Shanghai, Canton, Hong Kong in China and Yokohama, Kobé and Nagasaki in Japan. Their inventory ranged from outdoor to indood furniture in bamboo, bronze or wood. Provenance: - A Belgian private collection. - With an old label dated 1930 on the underside, bearing an old inscription.
