Mississippian Culture, Late Prehistoric Period, A.D. 1000-1500 Kincaid Site, Border of Massac and Pope Counties, Illinois lot of 2, lengths include 4-3/4 in. and 1-1/4 in. Crafted of aragonite, a carbonite mineral, “Snowy” and “Little Snowy” (the endearing names by which collectors know these figures), were discovered as surface finds in the 1950s at the base of Mound 8 at the Kincaid Mounds Historic Site, a Mississippian occupation (Boles 2012: 49). The Kincaid Site straddles the borders of Massac and Pope Counties, Illinois. The aragonite used is believed to have been mined prehistorically at the Wyandotte Cave, Crawford County, Indiana, where this specific type of aragonite is unique. Although not much is known about these sculptures, archaeological researchers at the site have recovered other humanoid objects with transformative avian characteristics made of fluorite and clay (Boles 2012: 47). It is thought that these objects may be clan totems (https://kincaidmounds.com/history: accessed December 14, 2020). Collection History: Gerber Collection Number: AG.H138 Found by Erben W.
