Stone with natural stone pigmentsChina, 16th century or laterDimensions: Height 9 cmWeight: 112 gramsThe Green Tara is a form of peaceful Buddha or Bodhisattva of the Tibetan Buddhism. This stone statue is worked with great detail and still has strong remnants of colour. Here she is seated on a lotus throne with the right leg pendent, foot standing on a smaller lotus flower that stems from the base. Usually her right hand is resting on the knee with palm facing the front, fingers pointing to the floor, varada mudra meaning gesture of dispensing of boons or generosity. The other hand is lifted at heart level with thumb and tip of ring finger touching, kartari mudra meaning bestowing refuge. From the same hand also runs the stem of a lotus flower with missing bud.To her right side is also a lotus flower, also called utpala. The Tara's head is slightly tilted to the left. Her whole body is adorned with many armlets, bracelets, beaded chains and pendants. She is wearing a short decorated dhoti over a longer, red one with lined brim. She wears an opulent tiara with a small Amithaba effigy in the center. She is framed by an ornamental aureole.
