Bronze with stone inlaysTibet, 18th centuryDimensions: Height 67 cm by 35 cmWeight: 10494 gramsBodhisattva Avalokiteshvara on a lotus base with beaded rim, a network of flowers and ornamental shapes flanks the Goddess. The Bodhisattva is dressed in a long, flowy robe from the waist, fastened by an ornamental waistband with stone inlay. The left hand is hovering beside the hip holding a flower stem, the right hand is lifted in front of her chest with thumb and tip of index finger touching. The upper body is also decorated with beautiful jewellery made of beads and flowers highlighted with stones. The round face is calm with almost closed eyes, elongated earlobes with circular ear pendants frame the face. Thin hairlines are visible underneath the five-pointed tiara which decorates the hair done up in a chignon. A small pagoda as finial. A thin scarf is wrapped around the shoulders and billows down to the ground. In Tibet the God of Compassion is called Chenrezig and can be either male or female.
