Description
Translation provided by Youdao
Ca. 400 BC. Ancient Greek. A red figure ware Apulian Krater with pedestal foot, cylindrical stem, inverted bell-shaped body and two lug handles. The painted scenes show (side A): a winged victory, sitting and holding a platter or box; (side B): a standing, cloaked figure with a walking cane. The scenes are framed by an upper and lower geometric border and flanked by vegetal motifs. Kraters such as this would have been used for mixing wine at drinking parties. This piece has been precisely dated having undergone Thermo Luminescence analysis by Ralf Kotalla, an independent German Laboratory. The samples collected date the piece to the period reflected in its style, whilst also showing no modern trace elements. Its TL certificate with full report will also accompany this lot. Excellent condition. Size: L:275mm / W:273mm ; 1.8kg; Provenance: From an important British collection of Mr. C.S.; originally acquired in the 1980s on the UK/European art markets.
