C. 100 AD, Roman. An iron pugio, or squat triangular dagger with prominent midrib and narrow, flat guard. A bulge in the handle would allow for greater grip. This dagger comes with its beautiful openwork scabbard featuring punched dot motifs in the form of a framed crescent moon. The pugio was a sidearm used by Roman soldiers as well as by civilians such as senators or other prominent citizens for self-defence. The weapon is best suited for short, stabbing motions, which would have deadly effects. Excellent condition with some repairs.Size: L:430mm / W:70mm ; 545g; Provenance: Property of a professional London art expert; obtained from an old British collection formed before 2000.
