Ca. 500-300 BC. Greek Hellenistic period. A bronze Phrygian helment with a conical body and a curved terminus, a flat protruding rim, and a small rectangular neck guard. This helmet is made particularly special as the crest is facing backwards, possibly indicating that this helmet was originally associated with a statue of the god Attis. Attis was the Phyrigian god of vegetation who was worshiped by a cult which was established c. 1250 BC in Dindymon. Excellent condition. Size: L:195mm / W:240mm ; 2.3kg; Provenance; Property of a Central London gallery, ex property of an European gentleman, formerly in Mr. Chris Arthurson collection since 1984; previously acquired by a gentleman from Berlin in 1947, part of Mr M. Schultz's collection since 1923, originally purchased by Mr. Jorg Krause in 1897. Fully Authenticated with XRF Certificate from a Belgium Laboratory. Accompanied by European Export licence dated 2020.
