700-1100 AD. Viking Age. A bronze ring comprising a circular hoop featuring overlapping terminals and a rounded plate bezel with a swastika in low relief against a yellow enamel background. In Viking society, swastikas were considered to symbolise the hammer of Thor, the god of thunder, and were frequently engraved on rings, hammers and other metal objects.
