100-300 AD. Roman. A silver pendant in the shape of a heart with an applied strap suspension loop with ribbing. The plate is decorated with an applied standing Cupid. Cupid is depicted naked with one hand resting by his side and another at his brow; he is framed within an ellipse, flanked by small applied disks and inscribed in an oval border; grape motifs appear above this border to the left and right. In Roman myth, Cupid is the god of desire, erotic love, attraction and affection; perhaps this piece was once a lover’s gift.
