1100-1300 AD. Byzantine. A stunning pair of gold earrings comprising hooks, from each of which is suspended an intricate frame of gold wires arranged around a large pearl in the upper part and an amethyst in the lower part. The exterior of the lower part of the frame is decorated with a arc of smaller pearls with occasional discoid gold spacers. The medieval empire of Byzantium was justly famous for the elegance of its jewellery, whether in precious metals for the royalty and aristocracy, or in bronze for people further down the social ladder. These beautiful items may once have belonged to a Byzantine noblewoman.
