The hunting theme is recurrent in the decorative arts of the 18th century.
These cervids can be compared to the work carried out by Quentin-Charles Pitoin (sculptor, foundryman and gilder), in particular the pair of deer and wild boar owls delivered for the first time on 28 October 1772 for the Salon de Mme Du Barry in Fontainebleau, kept in the Louvre Museum (N° OA5175).
The successful model was repeated several times in the 18th century. Other smaller examples are referenced: in the Queen's bedroom in Compiègne (N°C56D9), another in the Wrigthman collection at the Metropolitan in New York, another in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
It should be noted that a pair of candelabra of the same model sold in Drouot on 31/03/94, sold for 100 000 Frs, according to a family tradition, would have been bought from Princess Mathilde at Pillnitz Castle in Saxony.
The particularity and originality of our models lies in the fact that these animals are saddled, like certain Chinese bronzes.
