Rear Admiral Sir John Borlase Warren. Eight letters signed (John Borlase Warren) nearly all autograph to Alexander Davison, written in the aftermath of Trafalgar discussing various customs, Naval and financial matters including wine delivery, weather, news of an armistice and also Nelson's funeral. "I am glad...that all is arranged so well for poor dear Nelson's funeral and that the p. will be so respectably attended without the appearance of party on that day." Sir John Borlase Warren (1753-1822), who was Rear Admiral in 1799, Vice Admiral in 1805 and Admiral in 1810, was a popular Naval commander because of his outstanding successes in capturing or destroying a remarkable number of French ships. He halted the French landing expedition to Ireland in 1798 and by 1806 he commanded, in the Foudroyant, a squadron which, on 13 March, would capture 2 French ships homeward bound from the East Indies. Warren would later serve briefly as Commander in Chief of the North American station during the 1812-14 war with the United States. Provenance: Sothebys London, Nelson: The Alexander Davison collection, 21/10/2002 Lot 83
