MASTER OF THE RELIQUARY STATUE OF SAINT FLORUS BISHOP, French, Auvergne, worked 2nd quarter of 14th century (attr.). Bishop Saint Enthroned, c. 1325/50. Walnut, carved in full round, a quadrangular hole for relics at the back. The polychromy removed, remnants of old polychromy. Left hand missing, fingers of right hand added. Wooden base plaque later, damages due to age. With an expertise of Luca Mor in English. (Master of the Reliquary Statue of Saint Florus the Bishop in the Museum of Haute-Auvergne (active in the second quarter of the 14th century), Bishop Saint enthroned, c. 1325/50). There are quite a lot of examples of typical French Gothic enthroned bishops not only in Auvergne but also in the Ile-de-France and in Lorraine as one from Toul and one from Metz (both Lorraine), dated around 1320/30, both in the same posture and same arragement of drapery. The type of religious sculptures with a small quadrangular opening located in the centre of the back began to spread in the 9th and 10th century around the regions Auvergne and Limousin, giving rise to a longstanding tradition that continued in the 14th century. Luca Mor compares the bishop at hand with similar enthroned bishop figures in Usson (Puy-de-Dôme), Marcolés (Cantal) and in Saint Nactaire (Puy-de-Dôme) but "The relationship with the reliquary statue of St. Florus the Bishop (c. 1325/50) in the village with his name- Saint Flour (Cantal), once in the Cathedral of St. Pierre and today concerved in the nearby Musée de la Haute-Auvergne is insted much closer.(...) The similarity is so closed that it is not even possible to distinguish which of the two sculptures was made first, and it is likely that the lesson of the master craftsman carving St. Florus, perhaps also due to the devotional success of his works, was picked up on by at least one follower, the statue in Usson possibly representing an explicit consequence.". Meister des Heiligen Bischofs Florus (attr.) Frankreich, Auvergne, tätig 2. Viertel 14. Fassung abgenommen, Reste alter Fassung. Finger erg., linke Hand fehlt. Plinthe erg. Kleinere Fehlstellen. Alterssch. Mit einer Expertise von Luca Mor in englischer Sprache. (Master of the Reliquary Statue of Saint Florus the Bishop in the Museum of Haute-Auvergne (active in the second quarter of the 14th century), Bishop Saint enthroned, c. 1325/50).
