Paul Calle (1928 - 2010) and Chris Calle (B. 1961) "1920s - The Scourge of Fascism Arrives" Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Signed lower right. This painting originally appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands The 20th Century series 60? The Scourge of Fascism Arrives stamp issued March 16, 1998. Born in Italy in 1883, gifted writer and orator Benito Mussolini was also a cynical man prone to violence. In 1919, he founded the Partitio Nazionale Fascista, a totalitarian nationalist party. In October 1922, Mussolini and his followers marched on Rome. On October 31, Mussolini or Il Duce, "The Leader," as he was known to his followers, became Italy's youngest prime minister. By 1926 he had acquired sufficient power to construct and rule a fascist state. Il Duce then proceeded to lead his country down a path of self-destruction. Mussolini's fasci di combattimento or "black shirts" were thugs assigned to beat up minorities within the state. Mussolini's slogan Non si torna indietro, "There is no turning back," was a grim harbinger of the chaos and destruction that fascism would wreak on humanity in the 20th century.
