Jacques Callot (French, 1592 - 1635) Le Catafalque de l'Empereur Mathias Funeral Fiorenza Artwork Decorative Baroque Printmaker Draughtsman This c1619 original antique Callot etching is a beautifully detailed print on laid paper entitled "Le Catalfalque de l'Empereur Mathias" preserved in a mat with a clear plastic window. Written across the bottom is : "Esse quie Celebrate in Fiorenza dal Ser. Gran Duca per la Morte Dell'Imperator Mattias. M.D.C.X.I.X. Iacomo Callot". Jacques Callot was a baroque printmaker and draftsman from the Duchy of Lorraine. An important person in the development of the old master print, Callot made more than 1,400 etchings that chronicled the life of his period, featuring soldiers, clowns, drunkards, Gypsies, beggars, as well as court life. He also etched many religious and military images, and many prints featured extensive landscapes in their background.
