Description

Charles J Lundgren (New York, Connecticut, 1911 - 1988) Original Oil Painting on Masonite "USSR Kodor" Signed lower right. . Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the USSR stamp issued September 18, 1981. The masterful creation of the Kodor came about in an era when the demand for speed brought forth the drive to outdo yesterday's mark. Built by Layvateolly Suus of Finland, this long, low, and tall-sparred topsail schooner was wrought of the most daringly beautiful of all joinings of wood and sail. Compared to the more common two-masted vessels of her class, the three-masted Kodor is indeed quite large. And, although she carries a simple rig and a small crew, she packs large cargoes in her durable hull. Timber, coal, granite, cement, salt -- such were the ladings she carried in the twilight days of working sail. A thoroughbred of ships, the heavily canvassed Kodor's length of 132 ft. and 626 tons make her, as with others of her class, a remarkably seaworthy vessel able to slice through the waves with less effort and far greater speed than traditional ships of the past. After hoisting the Soviet flag, she came to Leningrad and began her voyages as a training vessel for the Leningrad Marine College. Month after month, year after year, a regular crew of 22 honed and hardened sailors train a continuous stream of young, eager cadets the ways of the sea aboard the majestic Kodor. On deck the lads learn quickly how man overcomes the awesome powers of the sea. Image Size: 19.25 x 22 in. Overall Size: 25 x 27 in. Unframed. (B07353)
