C. 1368-1644. Ming Dynasty. Greyish-brown stone head of Buddha in high relief with a three-rowed halo. Buddha is depicted with an elaborate high topknot (Ushnisha), abstract stylised features including high eyebrows, heavily-lidded, closed eyes, a small, aquiline nose, prominent, curved lips, a small chin and the characteristic large pendular ears. His shoulders, only partly preserved, are wrapped in heavy robes. Behind his head is a three-ringed halo. Buddha’s head is flanked by two rows of stylised seated figures. The seated posture refers to the moment just before Buddha receives enlightenment. Good condition; on a custom stand. Size: L:385mm / W:300mm (w/o stand); 12.2kg. Provenance: From the private collection of an Oxford gentleman; previously in an old British collection, formed in the 1980s on the UK / International art markets.
