崇祯瓷器既有明代的古拙传统，又具有清代细致缜密的特点，西方人习惯将这类器物年代定位“Transitional”（过渡期），并极为重视。此笔筒青花略有晕散，胎质白润坚细，上下各有暗刻花纹，笔法具有明代风韵，但格调已呈新颖，笔筒为文房用品，本器所表现的题材也和读书人有关，画片描绘汉代才子佳人司马相如与卓文君的故事。司马相如奉汉武帝之召晋京，在成都升仙桥上题写“大丈夫不乘驷马高车誓不过此桥”的豪言壮语，《太平御览》卷七三引《华阳国志》：汉时，蜀人司马相如(字长卿)往长安时，经过成都升仙桥，他在桥柱上题字:“不乘驷马高车，不过此桥。”表达自己必将衣锦还乡，荣归故里的信念。其画意隽永生动，人物形象传神。
