STELE DEPICTING SURYA Stone Nepal , 14th to 15th century Dimensions: Height 23 cm by 14 cm Weight: 3109 grams Surya is the solar deity in Hinduism and here depicted with three smaller deities below. Two sunflowers are next to him, both his hands are held out to the front showing the abhaya mudra, gesture of fearlessness and he is wearing a big garland around his body. A three-pointed tiara sits on the head which also bears an aureole. Three smaller deities are bowing to his feet, showing mudras or holding objects. They also bear their own aureoles and have the third eye. The whole composition bears another, bigger fiery aureole and is attached to a platform, the back is flat.
