Momoyama period (1573-1615) 16th/17th century The rectangular cabinet of black-lacquered wood with a hinged cover and one wide, shallow drawer, decorated in gold hiramaki-e and inlays of shell on the top with a shaped panel of birds in flowering plants, and on the front with panels of oxen and maple trees, and a long-tailed bird in ivy, the sides with bush clover, tachibana (mandarin orange trees), and scrolling ivy, each side enclosed with geometric borders, the underside of the cover with autumn plants in gold hiramaki-e on a black-lacquer ground, the lock plate and handles copper 13 1/2 x 19 3/4 x 9 1/8in (33 x 50.2 x 24.1cm)
