Power figure Nkondi
Power figure Nkondi
Studded with nails and blades, wood, brown patina, eyes set with glass, right arm raised (missing knife, nails and blades driven into the back have been removed) , the protruding ventral cavity closed by a mirror. H : 76 cm Congo
The study carried out by Professor François NEYT, on Sept. 27, 2013, for this Nkonde statue will be given to the buyer.
We thank Father François NEYT, art historian, curator, author of many books on Tribal Art and in particular on Songye statues, for his two-page report signed and dated September 27, 2013 :
- “This Kongo sculpture belongs to the type of Nkonde. They are formidable effigies intended to ward off evil spirits, to discern the truth. A more ovoid-faced statue is in the Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren. With the same attitude: standing posture, right arm raised, fingers of the hand forming a circle intended to hold a weapon, left arm resting on the hip.
- "This work comes from Mayombe and would have served at the beginning of the XXth century. "
