Given that the motto is dissimilar to the peerage family there is a likelihood that this coffee pot was once in the possession of a cadet branch of the family. Certainly, the motto ‘Nil temere’ as engraved above the crest is used by other branches of the Balfour family, but not with the same crest or at least one that is slightly differenced.
