Bronze Battle of the Nile 'Davison's Medal', dated 1798, the obverse depicts Peace with olive branch standing on shoreline outcrop with shield under left arm bearing bust of Nelson and legend 'Europe's Hope and Britain's Glory', the reverse depicting the fleet offshore with rising sun in background and inscription 'Victory of the Nile August 1 1798', legend: "Almighty God Has Blessed His Majesty's Arms", inscribed to the edge 'From Alex r. Davison Esqr, St James's Square - a tribute of regard' (unnamed): Information: no official medal was issued for the action until 1848 by which time very few potential claimants were still alive. Alexander Davison had this medal made in Birmingham at his own expense for distribution to officers and men present at the battle. Captains and above received gold, other officers silver or bronze gilt and ratings bronze (as here). 45mm diam
