Two small Satsuma vases Meiji era (1868-1912) Each of baluster form decorated in polychrome enamels and gilt on a clear, crackled ground, the first molded on the shoulder with a sinewy dragon,the body painted with chrysanthemums and bamboo fences, the shoulder with a lappet collar of clouds and sacred jewels, the foot decorated with crashing waves, signed on the underside Satsuma Kizan saku and with the mark of the Shimazu family; the second with a bold design of chrysanthemums in a flower cart and chrysanthemums and plum blossoms in a woven basket, the shoulder with a lappet collar of stylized floral emblems below a keyfret band, the foot with a band of floral lozenges, signed on the underside Kizan tsukuru and the mark of the Shimazu family 6 1/8in (15.5cm); 6 3/8in (16.2cm) high
