Chris Calle (B. 1961) "Legends of the West - Indian Chief" Signed lower right. Mixed Media on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood Mint Stamps of the World Legends of the Old West Collector's Panel. As with many American Indian traditions, the origin of the headdress is lost in the mists of time and shrouded by tribal secrecy. But most agree that the elaborate, feathered headdress loosely associated with all American Indians was the invention of the Sioux, the proud warriors of the open plains. Eventually, the use of the headdress expanded among the tribes. Yet each of the tribes and each individual within them added a special touch to each headdress. Every feather was prepared with great care, with each representing a particular feat. Image Size: 22.5 x 19.25 in. Overall Size: 29 x 23.25 in. Unframed. (B14630) See More
