Ken Lilly (British, 1929 - 1996) "Montagu's Harrier Bird" Initialed lower left. Original Watercolor painting on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Great Britain block of four Species at Risk stamps issued May 20, 1986. Soaring low over the English moorlands, the Montagu's Harrier scans the landscape for its prey. This strikingly beautiful bird of prey is able to glide over the countryside for long distances with only an occasional beat or two of its long narrow wings. A summer visitor to the British Isles, the Montagu's Harrier comes to nest and raise its young. However, in recent years there has been a drastic decline in its numbers. This is due to destruction of the birds' habitat, persecution by trophy hunters and the use of pesticides. Indeed, only two pairs of Montagu's Harriers are known to have bred in the British Isles in recent years. Image Size: 13.5 x 13.5 in. Overall Size: 16 x 16 in. Unframed. (B10225) See More
