Dennis Lyall (American, B. 1946) "Harbor Scene with Lighthouse" Signed and dated ('89) lower right. Original Oil painting on Canvas. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. From man's earliest seafaring days, natural landmarks like volcanos and man-made lanterns placed along the shores guided navigators through troubled waters. From these humble beginnings, lighthouses developed into priceless navigational tools. The Nation's oldest functioning lighthouse, Sandy Hook, New Jersey, was first lighted on June 11, 1764, and survived the Revolutionary War. America's easternmost lighthouse, West Quoddy Head, Maine, housed one of the first fog bells placed along the coast to warn ships away from treacherous rocks. Spanish-style Admiralty Head in Washington state served briefly as a maritime guard to the Puget Sound and has become one of the most popular tourist attractions of the area. Originally built in 1803, Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in North Carolina was rebuilt in 1870 to become the Nation's tallest brick lighthouse. And standing in four feet of water off the coast of Florida, the American Shoals Lighthouse was first lighted on the night of July 15, 1880, and has since helped to significantly reduce the number of shipwrecks along this treacherous coastline.
