Charles J Lundgren (New York, Connecticut, 1911 - 1988) "U.S.S. Nevada" Signed lower right. Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover for the U.S.S. Nevada. One of the toughest war-tested veterans of the U.S. Fleet, the U.S.S. Nevada was commissioned on 11 March 1916 with Captain William S. Sims in command. U.S.S. Nevada joined the Atlantic Fleet in time to conduct gunnery training and later serve with the British Fleet during World War I. At war's end, she served with both the Atlantic and Pacific Fleet. On 7 December 1941, U.S.S. Nevada was moored off Ford Island. As the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, she was able to maneuver and return the Japanese gun fire. Her engineers got up steam, and she headed for the open sea, only to be struck by one torpedo and several Japanese bombs. While attempting to leave the harbor she was struck again. Fearing she might sink in the channel, thus blocking any possible escape for other ships, she was beached at Hospital Point. She lost 50 men and had 109 more men wounded. Almost miraculously, she was refloated on 12 February 1942 and repaired at Pearl Harbor and the Puget Sound Navy Yard. She rejoined the Pacific Fleet in May 1942 in time to provide fire support for the capture of Attu in the Aleutian Islands. She then sailed to join the Atlantic Fleet, and on D-Day, 6 June 1944, she participated in the Normandy Invasion. Thus U.S.S. Nevada was among the few ships to participate in both theaters of World War II, receiving seven Battle Stars. Image Size: 13.75 x 15.75 in. Overall Size: 20.5 x 21.75 in. Unframed. (B10348)
