On September 18, 1793 -- the thirteenth year of America's Independence -- President George Washington laid the cornerstone for the United States Capitol building. And so began construction on the stately structure which has come to stand as a symbol of the power of the people ... and the place where the American government rests. Through the years, the Capitol grew ... and along with it the American Nation. Even during the raging battles of the Civil War, construction on the Capitol went on. When President Abraham Lincoln was criticized for continuing the construction during the costly War, he replied "if people see the Capitol going on, it is a sign we intend the Union shall go on."
