The bitter war was over; George Washington was free to return home. However, though he did not know it then, his service to his country was just beginning. When the call came, he again found strength to lead his people. Washington took office as President on April 30, 1789, and no better man could have filled this vital role. More than anyone else of his day, he was keenly aware of the responsibility he shouldered. On one occasion, he wrote, "I walk on untrodden ground. There is scarcely any part of my conduct which may not hereafter be drawn into precedent." He was sixty-two and tired when he reluctantly accepted a second term. But, during these years he performed one of his greatest services to his country: he insisted that America remain neutral in European wars.
