Louise Nevelson (1899-1988) Moon Zag III, 1979 Black painted wood construction 25-1/2 x 28 x 7-3/4 inches (64.8 x 71.1 x 19.7 cm) PROPERTY FROM THE COLLECTION OF ELAINE AND PERRY SNYDERMAN PROVENANCE: The Pace Gallery, New York; Judith L. Posner & Associates, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, 1980. NOTE: In 1968 sculptor Louise Nevelson conceived of "Zags," wall-mounted wooden reliefs that she constructed out of different sized boxes, filled with machined objects, and spray-painted black. In their complex arrangement of geometric shapes, the Zags reference Cubist collages, Maya steles, and urban architecture. While her contemporaries David Smith and Donald Judd were creating streamlined metallic sculptures, Nevelson favored materials and forms that evoke personal, even domestic environments: wooden balusters, finials, spindles, and children's building blocks. The black color of the Zags not only unifies the composition, but also suggests a psychological state of mind. Moon Zag III is a wonderfully intricate assemblage anchored by full- and crescent-moon shapes. HID03101062020 © 2020 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved See More
