AN ANTIQUE MAP, "The Western Coast of Louisiana and the Coast of New Leon," LONDON, CIRCA 1775, a hand colored engraving on paper, "By Thos. Jefferys, Geographer to His Majesty," a fragment from The American Atlas and The West-India Atlas, published by Robert Sayer (1725–1794), showing rivers named in English, Spanish and French, "Vast plains which are continual savannah intermixed with woods and full of wild beeves[beef]. They are inhabited by the Canokosses, the Ebahamas, Caouaches, Quelameloueches, Teaos and several other tribes of wandering indians.," the Rio Grande titled Rio del Norte, South Padre Island titled Ysla de San Josef, Galveston titled Isle de St. Louis, ending in the east with the mouth of the Sabie River. 20" x 26" Note: Thomas Jefferys (c. 1719 – 1771), Geographer to King George III. The present map purportedly compiled from French maps, confiscated Spanish maps and surveys by Jefferys for the King. Few towns or missions appear on this map other than Nuevo and Viejo presidios.
