AN ANTIQUE MAP, "Accuratissima Europæ, Multis locis correcta, et Nuperrimé edita," CAREL ALLARD, AMSTERDAM, 17TH/18TH CENTURY, parcel gilt hand colored engraving on paper, Carel Allard (Dutch 1648 - 1709), cartographer, Philip Tideman (Dutch 1657-1705), printer, William van der Gouwen (Dutch circa 1640-1720), engraver, with an upper left figural title cartouche, a figure of Athena armed with spear and shield perches in fluffy clouds above a female personification of Europe, with an Austro Hungarian style crown and scepter draped in a Dutch orange silk and gilt embroidered cape and purple dress, she gestures upward from an elbow resting on books and pedestal with partial scene of the Adoration of the Magi, a young page kneels holding a rotunda style birdcage his head turning towards Poseidon and Amphitrite who points to a fleet of five merchant ships at sea, Iceland shows a spewing volcano, overlaid with curving latitudinal and longitudinal lines, a compass rose, and hand inscribed U/L in ink margin number 3. Sheet: 21 1/4" x 24 3/4" Plate: 20 1/4" x 23 7/16" Note: Hekla Volcano, one of Iceland's most active volcanoes is recorded during the 17th century to have erupted impressively for a year from 1636-1637 and then again for seven months in 1693. A second erupting volcano found herein this map on the Island of Sicily is noted to have changed the coast line significantly in 1669.
