A VINTAGE ITALIAN "SPACE AGE" STYLE CHROME TABLE LAMP, BY GAETANO SCIOLARI, 1970s, of square lantern form with central stepped columnar shaft issuing cylinder pegs, supporting rectangular panels with splayed ends and centering a circular window revealing a single sphere mount, raised on a conforming base fitted for electricity and includes the original neutral knobbed silk barrel shade with chrome banding details, height: 17", diameter: 10"; with shade height: 32 1/2", diameter: 16 1/8". Note: Gaetano Sciolari (Italian 1927-1994) an accomplished and internationally acclaimed lighting designer of the 20th century. He graduated with a degree in architecture and afterward started training to be a film director but returned home to the family-owned business Sciolari Lighting following the passing of his father. His earlier sophisticated and sculptural style could perhaps be thought of as more conservative by his following stricter adherence to Modernist principals but fortunately for us, he evolved into a more individual "space-age" style during the 1970s. His utilization of various materials in unheard-of methods liked brass with chrome, or textured metals contrasted with ice glass and variants thereof never lost that sophistication and sculptural appeal. No cliché intended but Sciolari helped to jettison lighting design from jet age to space age. His accomplishments are many and far more than space limits here but since his passing prices for his lighting are climbing the world over.
