He entered the Royal Navy at the age of 14 and pursued a successful career in that service for the rest of his life: in 1873-74 he served with distinction in the Ashanti War, Suakin in 1884-85, and commanded three warships at various times, and was also Captain of the Royal Naval College, Greenwich (1893-1900); was aide-de-camp to the King; and finally became Rear Admiral in 1906. He was noted for his well-regarded logistical reforms. He played rugby for England in 1875. The large amount of material, mostly deriving from the last two years of his life, comprises many invitations to dinners, balls, naval drinks parties, and other events in Portsmouth, at Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, and on various warships. One invitation is to a private meeting of the Women's National Anti-Suffrage League. There are newspaper cuttings, including several of his obituary notices from 1909, along with many black-edged condolence letters and cards, including those from various Admirals of the Fleet and Sea Lords. There are also cuttings relating to the death of Edward VII in 1912 (with an invitation to Mrs Login to the funeral) and the accession of George V. The second album consists of Login family photographs, many studio portraits, including schoolboy letters from Cyril and Harry Login dated 1922. Among the various letters loosely inserted into the scrap book is a letter written to Lady Login from Charles Beaumont Phipps (1901-1866), on behalf of Queen Victoria, to express her condolences on the death of her husband, Sir John Spencer Login in October 1863.
