A gold-mounted tortoiseshell box reputedly presented to Muhammad Ali Khan Wallajah, Nawab of Arcot (Reg. 1749-95) by the East India Company in 1740 England, 18th Century of rounded form with lifting lid, a portrait miniature on ivory of the Nawab set behind glass to the centre, the edges with gold mounts decorated with bands of cable design, the lid with painted green and brown stripes, typed note detailing provenance to reverse 7.9 cm. diam. Footnotes: Provenance By repute presented to Nawab Muhammad Ali Khan Wallajah of Arcot in 1740 and later presented to Marie Adelaide Freeman-Thomas, Marchioness of Willingdon (1875-1960) in 1940 by a Prince of Arcot.
