A silver filigree and Lazurite enamelled casket Indonesia or China, late 17th/ early 18th Century of rectangular form on shaped bracket feet with hinged lid and suspended loop handles to each side, profusely decorated in filigree with floral motifs, the lid with a floral spray, the flowerheads decorated in cloisonné with blue enamel 14.6 x 9.1 x 8.9 cm. Footnotes: Much 17th century filigree came to Europe as a result of the private activities of individuals connected to the Dutch United East India company (V.O.C.), whose head-quarters in the East Indies were at Batavia, the site of modern day Jakarta in Indonesia. As an important centre of trade on the maritime silk road, it is likely that Chinese silversmiths moved there to produce works in the European taste. For a related turbo shell cup and stand with very similar filigree work and lazurite reserves sold at Sotheby's see Treasures, 4 July 2018, lot 11.
