This charming sketch documents the friendly relationship Marie Laurencin had with members of the European avant-garde. [Henri] Pierre Roché (1879-1959) was a noted art collector and enthusiastic proponent of the Dada movement, an art agent, and writer ( Jules et Jim was his 1959 autobiography). German writer Franz Hessel (1880-1941) referred to in the note on the reverse, was Roché's close friend, and together with Walter Benjamin translated three volumes of Proust into German. On the reverse of this card, Laurencin wrote to Pierre Roché's Munich address at Kaulbachstrasse 56 III: " D'abord j'avais perdu l'adresse - et puis il faut revenir. - J'attends Hessel - et il faut voir les Indépendants. Marie Laurencin." (First I lost the address, and had to come back. I'm waiting for Hessel, and we have to see the Independents [exhibition].)
