Provenance:
- Partridge Fine Arts, London, July 1984.
- Swiss private collection.
The ornamental table on offer, with its magnificent, large and extremely finely painted porcelain plate, matches a type of gueridon, like those made especially in the period around 1780-90 by the famous Parisian ebenist Adam Weisweiler (1744-1820), and was a popular model of the workshop. Our table was purchased from the famous London art dealer Partridge in 1984 and described there as a "late 18th century bronze gueridon with porcelain plate".
The porcelain plaque bears the blue Sèvres mark and the painter's mark of Jacques-François Micaud, who was active between 1757 and 1810. A pair of plates painted by Micaud with flower baskets, from the collection of J. Pierpont Morgan, was sold at Christie's New York, Auction 17-18 May 2005, Lot No. 80. Another plate featuring a still-life of flowers, grapes, vine bowers and peaches by Micaud, dated 1805 was sold at Christie's New York, Auction 20 May 2008, Lot No. 152.
