INLAID TABLE,
Indo-Portuguese. Goa, 17th/18th century.
Rosewood, carved and opulently inlaid with ivory and wood, in part dyed. Rectangular, slightly protruding top, the frame with four drawers. On conical legs, the upper third carved as female busts in prayer, the lower parts as seated fantasy animals.
117 x 67 x 84 cm.
Hands of one female bust, missing. Profiled strips on the legs, incomplete. Some repairs and losses.
Provenance:
- Private collection, Portugal.
The carved figures on the legs are comparable to those of the cabinet in the Figueira da Foz Municipal Museum in Portugal, which cabinet dates back to the 17th century. A comparable table can be found in the inventory of the Museum of Pontevedra in Galicia (Grace Hardendorff Burr. Hispanic Furniture. New York 1964. p. 48, Fig. 48).
An almost identical table was sold on 10 April 2014 at Christie's London, Lot No. 136 (Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds Including A Private Collection Donated to Benefit The University of Oxford).
